When a student decides to further his studies, two options may pop up in his mind – either to apply for an education loan or to apply for student grants for college. There are a lot of differences when a student apply for a loan or a grant.

A study loan is taken because it is the simplest and fastest way to get financial support for the whole course. However, like all loans, study loans must be paid back so after the student has completed his course, he has to put aside a proportion of his salary to pay back the loan. Many previous students regretted that they didn’t apply for the student grant because they were not patient enough to wait for the application and approval process to complete.

If they were given a choice, most of them would never apply for a loan to support their education expenses while studying in the university or college.

Student grants for college are more suitable to be applied primarily because students are not required to pay back the grants. The situation is similar like receiving a fund from the charity to pay a specific bill. Students who apply for study loans, on the other hand, do not have to worry about paying back when they have not completed the course, however as soon as he completes his course he has to pay his first instalment within a certain period of time.

Teach grants and Pell grants give away not more than $5,000 per semester to each student, and this amount is actually more than enough to support a student for several semesters. Therefore, these are the best type of grants which should be applied by students if they have to depend wholly on the grants to survive.

When students have already applied for the student grants for college, it is not wise to apply for a loan because they may spend luxuriously when it was actually unnecessary to be spending too much during studying.

At the end of the course, if the students are unable to get a qualified job that can pay back their loan, they are still required to pay back the debts. Therefore, if a student really needs extra funding when they already have student grants, they should find other sources of income such as a part time job.
